In the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic and since writing the COVID-19 Layoff Survival Guide several weeks ago, over at  – I want to underline the fact that the job market has changed.

The good news

We are not in a  recession.

We are not in a depression.

The economy is NOT going to be ‘reset’.

Personal  debt is not going to be forgiven…. you’ will have to go back to work eventually!

Life is on ‘pause’ for many people and many many organizations – but the economy is not dead.

When life as we once knew it restarts — and it will — it’ll be with a bang! 

Work , it may not look exactly the same as it did before COVID-19, BUT mostly it will.

So, there will be a lot of pent-up demand to satisfy.

Every day on the news, governments the world over talk about restarting the economy while people debate it that’s safe.  The government and businesses  want the economy started up again AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Why?  Because this is a global phenomenon that effects every country’s economy in the world.   Because we are all interconnected through commerce, the first economy to recover and have its workforce return to a normal Monday to Friday 9-5 routine, WINS! This is especially true of  any economy which is export driven.

So, that was the good news.

Now the bad news

The labor market has shifted from an employee driven market where talent is considered to be ‘scarce” to an employer driven market where talent is once again deemed plentiful.

This has two immediate impacts on you as a job hunter:

  • Firstly, most employers will not be advertising that they’re hiring (and many still are) BUT they’re not going to advertise the fact.
    • If you’ve read Guerrilla Marketing for Job hunters (any edition) you already know why.  so you may think that there are no jobs out there… wrong!  Many companies are going to be tripping over themselves to hire.  Many more will be in full panic mode because the way they let people go when the pandemic hit… may cause their “brand” to be less that desirable and make it really hard to hire.
      • so the “Hidden” or unadvertised job market is where you’re going to get the best results again.
  • Secondly, as global economies exit COVID-19 hiring and interviewing will be placed in the hands of human resource people.
    • Now many of you know that I have many friends in HR around the world who are fabulously talented and forward thinking and you may get to meet some of them.  But chances are you won’t.  So you need to understand that responding to ‘career ads’ on LinkedIn or Indeed or anywhere else… is a gamble… and you most likely will be treated as a ‘commodity’ because “some people’  (I’m rolling my eyes?) wrongly think there’s lots of talent on the market and they as a hiring manager can take their time hiring.  Ain’t so!
      • In truth, while there may be a lot of people looking… not all people have equal talent – and you know that if you watch America’s Got Talent.
